The Gate, Bournheath

Transforming a dated dining space into a light-filled, energy-efficient restaurant

Overview

Promabuild was appointed to deliver the transformation of the existing restaurant space at The Gate Public House in Bournheath. The project involved the demolition of a deteriorating single-storey extension and the construction of a new, architecturally enhanced restaurant area. The brief was clear: create a bright, welcoming dining environment that maximises natural light and significantly improves the building’s thermal performance—without altering the footprint of the site.

Scope

Demolition, structural rebuild, energy upgrades, and design enhancements

Project Highlights

  • Full Demolition & Rebuild:
The original flat-roofed extension was demolished due to poor insulation, low ceilings, and failing roof structure. The space was completely reimagined to better serve the needs of the business and its patrons.
  • Steel Frame Construction:
A new steel frame was erected to support a robust and lasting structure. The traditional masonry infill was retained and upgraded internally for improved thermal efficiency.
  • Vaulted Ceilings & Pitched Roof:
The low, oppressive ceiling was replaced with a double-pitched vaulted roof, creating a spacious interior and allowing for increased ceiling height. The vaulted design mirrors the main building’s architectural style while enhancing the internal ambiance.
  • Large Glazing Features:
Full-height aluminium-framed glazing and gable-end windows, paired with conservation rooflights, flood the space with natural light, offering diners a bright, uplifting environment.
  • Underfloor Heating & Enhanced Insulation:
A new insulated floor was installed with integrated underfloor heating, delivering improved comfort and energy efficiency year-round.
  • Courtyard Dining Integration:
The refurbished space seamlessly connects to an enclosed courtyard area, enhancing indoor-outdoor flow and expanding the dining experience.

The Outcome

The Gate’s new restaurant extension is a perfect blend of traditional form and contemporary function. Promabuild’s attention to detail and commitment to quality has delivered a warm, energy-efficient, and aesthetically striking dining space that not only meets modern hospitality standards but enriches the local architectural fabric.
